Join me in an amazing archaeological exploration on the sacred island of Artemis and Apollo. A whole ancient Greek city narrates a story full of money and glamour! Lets take a trip back into the past touring the remains of the city and reading its history in the cracks of time. The most educating and entertaining way to see Delos.
Our meeting point is the quay, 100m further than the town hall, where the boats to Delos depart from. That is where a kiosk is situated, where we buy our round tickets (20e per person) and where I am to supply you with a map of Delos. We arrive 30′ later at the entrance of the site (no need to wait in a queue) and you get your tickets into the site. From now on we move on our own making a first stop at the Agora of the Competaliasts, for the necessary narration of the historical background and the excavations that took place on the island. We walk through an area covered with ancient shops and workshops, realizing the way the city was built (drainage and sewage systems, materials, methods of building) and we procced to the House of Dionysos (4th-3rd century BC) to admire its outstanding mosaic and realize the structure of the building along with the stories that come with all that. The House of Cleopatra is a few metres opposite us, where the owner Cleopatra and her husband Dioskourides had their statues erected at the entrance of their Hellenistic mansion. The House of the Trident will be the next to amaze you with its various mosaics and the frescoes still on its walls. Ascending to the theatre of Delos we take a breath before we continue to the House of the Dolphins and the House of the Masks famous for their impressive mosaics. As we move along, mount Cynthos stands proud in front of us challenging us to climb on top of it. The choice is in your hands as it might be quite strenuous but the view from up there is more than rewarding. As an alternative we could pay a visit to the temple of Isis and the Egyptian quarter before descending to the Museum (short restroom break here). The Sacred Lake with its palm tree waits for us as that is the proper place to narrate the myth of the birth of Apollo and Artemis. The Lions are the most famous monument waiting for you immortalize them with your cameras, bringing a symbol of power and competition back home. On our way back to the boat we are to notice the temple of Artemis and Apollo, the statue of the god (or better what has been left of it) and realize the Sacred Way decorated with all pedestals of staues, donations of the rich and famous of the ancient times. Within 2.5 hrs of guidance we complete the tour boarding back to Mykonos standing speechless in front of the glory of our ancestors eternal beauty of the sunset colours.
Paths through the ancient Roman hippodrome and the stadium of the city bring us at the eastern side of Delos and to the Stadium quarter. Continuing further, we reach the Synagogue of Delos, possibly one of the oldest out of Israel. Moreover, we explore one of the ancient houses of the area, characterised by its impressive private cictern, related with religious festivals of the Jewish cult. At the museum of Delos, we will have the chance to admire the original statues and all the findings of the excavations, fulfilling a trip through the art of our ancestors! The final and possibly most impressive part of our tour includes a hike to the highest spot of Delos, mount Kynthos that offers unrestricted views all over the island and the neighboring Cycladic islands.
